چکیده

This paper shows how to distribute GPS-time with s-accuracy and below even in Ethernet-based distributed systems. Our SynUTC-approach 1 is based upon a simple network controller-level hardware for timestamping data packets as they leave and arrive at a node, which comes in two avours: The memory-based timestamping method exploited by our Network Time Interface (NTI) M-Module timestamps data packets as the network controller accesses them in memory. This technique can be used for virtually any type of network and network controllers. For 10 Mb/s Ethernet, for example, our experimental evaluation revealed a time distribution accuracy down to the s-range. Still, memory-based timestamping requires network controllers that cannot store entire packets on-chip, and the available connguration parameters must be carefully chosen in order to cope with the various hidden sources of timing uncertainty. To escape from those limitations , we recently developed a novel MII-based timestamping method that can be used in conjunction with almost any modern 10/100 Mb/s Ethernet chipset. The timestamping hardware sits at the standard MII-interface between network controller and transceiver here, and will allow a time distribution accuracy well below the s-range.

Mobile Spatial Audio Communication System

As a first step in studying the application of the global positioning system (GPS) in a spatial audio communication system, an experimental platform was developed using commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) GPS units: a Garmin Rino 120 (Rino) and a laptop. Software running on the laptop was developed to create a spatial-audio communication system based on GPS data and the two-way radio link on the R...

PSynUTC - Evaluation of a High Precision Time Synchronization Prototype System for Ethernet LANs

This article presents an overview and some evaluation results of our PSynUTC prototype system for GPS time distribution and time synchronization in Ethernetbased LANs. PSynUTC does not need dedicated GPS receivers at every computing node but uses ordinary data packets for disseminating time information. High accuracy is achieved by combining (1) hardware packet timestamping at the network inter...

Robust WiFi Time-of-Flight Positioning System

Reusing commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) WiFi access points (AP) for location-based services is an attractive and cost-effective approach to provide the much-needed positioning information in those scenarios where GPS fails. Classical solutions for WiFi-based positioning are based on signalstrength measurements [1]. Relying on signal-strength measurements has well-known limitations, such as the ...

Building Fault-Tolerant Hardware Clocks from COTS Components

Clocks with a bounded drift rate are an important tool in the construction of dependable applications. However, the drift rates of clocks provided by operating systems on some computing platforms are not always bounded, e.g. due to lost interrupts. We show how one can build clocks with a bounded drift rate from components off-the-shelf (COTS). Our approach can be used to achieve a tight synchro...

The DEAR-COTS Replication Framework

The DEAR-COTS (Distributed Embedded ARchitecture using Commercial Off-The-Shelf components) architecture provides a COTS-based framework to execute reliable hard real-time applications. To ease the task of building reliable realtime applications on top of COTS components, a simple and transparent programming model is provided, in order that programmers abstract from the low-level implementation...
